Construction progress is ramping up at one of Downtown Biloxi’s historic buildings and a major arts hub.
If you pass by the Saenger Theatre now, you’ll notice tarps have been removed and you can see construction workers performing repairs on the building’s fly tower, which holds rigging and equipment for the stage.
Built in 1929, the building has been closed since March 2018 in order to perform those repairs and update the air conditioning system.
Work on the exterior portions of the building are expected to be completed by the end of this year and the next step for the city after that is to inspect the interior in order to perform renovations there. Cecilia Dobbs Walton with the City of Biloxi said, “The opening of the Saenger is contingent on the work. The exterior and the interior, the City of Biloxi wants to have the building open as soon as possible. It wants to have all these dance recitals and these groups to use the Saenger Theatre, as it’s always been intended too, but we want to make sure that it is safe.”
Renovation costs for the exterior of the building are expected to total $2 million while interior restoration costs will be determined once that project is open for bids.
